Prepare for lower-risk complex RPAS operations with training focused on crew coordination, mission planning, flight review readiness, and BVLOS-style operating workflows. This program combines structured ground school with practical training using mission-ready aircraft, control stations, and procedures suited to complex operations.

Key Notes

  • Transport Canada recognized and approved flight school.
  • Minimum 20 hours of ground school is required.
  • Candidates must pass the Advanced Exam and Level 1 Complex Exam before the in-person flight review.
  • Complex operations are conducted under an RPAS Operator Certificate (RPOC).

Classroom (20 hrs minimum)

RPAS regulations modules include:

1. RPAS Regulations CARs, Division VI rules, pilot certificates, declarations, RPOC, and BVLOS limits.
2. RPAS Airframe Airworthiness, redundancy, C2 links, GCS setup, waterproofing, and battery planning.
3. Human Factors CRM, fatigue, situational awareness, automation use, and visual observer coordination.
4. Meteorology Density altitude, wind, fog and icing, GFA use, and weather-based GO/NO-GO decisions.
5. Navigation VNC, VTA, and CFS use, GPS limits, route planning, population density, and alternates.
6. Flight Operations CONOPS, site surveys, risk management, DAA procedures, SOPs, and reporting.
7. Theory of Flight Weight and balance, lift and thrust, stability, and performance limits.
8. Radiotelephony VHF use, uncontrolled airspace calls, crew communications, and monitoring frequencies.

Practical (flight training + review)

Hands-on flight training focuses on lower-risk BVLOS workflows, crew coordination, and flight review readiness. Training is delivered using mission-ready aircraft, control stations, and procedures suited to complex operations.

  • Pre-flight planning and site survey: Airspace, weather and NOTAMs, population density, alternates, and GO/NO-GO decisions.
  • Crew coordination: Briefing visual observers, CRM, communications, and task hand-offs.
  • BVLOS-style manual flight: Heading, speed, altitude changes, and obstacle routing with VO and DAA support.
  • GCS / C2 management: Antenna orientation, link monitoring, detect-and-avoid procedures, and contingency planning.
  • Lost-link and fly-away response: RTH setup, reconnection actions, reporting, and abnormal procedure drills.
  • Flight review readiness: Take-off, landing, emergency procedures, and Level 1 Complex flight review preparation.
